You may be seeing some posts of mine about positivity. I have really been trying to work on being more positive and talking positively to myself and about myself. I recently read a really good book with some exercises in it regarding positive self talk. Here are some things I wrote down in order to be able to believe them more. This would be a great exercise for anyone!
Start by writing
I love myself, therefore -
and then write down the things you do or think because you love yourself. Here are mine.
I nourish my body
I do positive self talk
I rest when I am tired
I learn and gain knowledge
I do things that bring me joy
God loves me
I worship God and my Savior
I take care of my relationships
I walk with confidence
I accept who I am. I approve of myself
I accept my body
My body has created life
My body is beautiful
My body is strong
My body will transform as I love it
Others appreciate my healthy choices and are inspired by them
Others are inspired by my transformations
I get along great with my family
I am loved and appreciated by my family
I am a good mom
I am enough
I am a sweet wife
I am a charitable person
I work hard for what I want
If we say these things, we start to believe them. When we start to believe them they become true. If I were saying negative things about myself, I would be attracting negativity into my life. When I am saying and believing positive things, that helps create a positive life with positive outcomes.
What do you think?? Do you believe we attract negativity when we are negative and attract positivity when we are positive?
I loved taking the Stoddard's family pictures in Grace, Idaho. The kids were so well behaved and having fun at their family picture session! Parker got scratched a few different times and still smiled for the pictures afterward. I loved seeing the parents interact with these sweet children!
I loved photographing the Lybbert Family! Austin is my cousin on my dad's side so I have lots of fun memories growing up with him. He is married to the cutest girl ever, Kelsie! I love her so much. Kelsie and Austin came to Logan for the day and got their family pictures taken! Lacie, the almost one year old was so sweet the whole time! She would smile if mom or dad were standing by me to make her smile, but I was just not funny enough for her to smile in the family photos! She ended up snuggling with me at the end of the session and my heart melted. I love taking pictures late in the evening when the sun goes behind the hills. It makes for the dreamiest family pictures. I also love hanging out with people I love and capturing them being so beautiful!
I know you are all happy that it’s summer! Family vacations, family reunions, summer barbecues, weddings, and family pictures are some of my favorite things in summer. Summer often calls for a lot of photo opportunities and we as humans don’t always love getting our pictures taken. Today I am going to share some tips for you to feel good about getting your photo taken.
1. Positive self talk. Ditch the negativity in your life! You don’t need to change your self at all before you get your photo taken. You are beautiful the way you are because you are you! Practice saying things like, I am worthy of love, my life deserves to be documented, I am enough, and I am beautiful. You get the idea!
2. Hydrate and get enough sleep! Water and sleep does your body good. I feel like drinking water is the answer to everything lol. It really does help you feel better!
3. Practice your picture smile in the mirror so you’re more likely to like your smile in photos.
4. Buy a new outfit for pictures that you love and feel comfortable and confident in. If you have something in your closet that is already your favorite, then wear that! Sometimes a new outfit is all you need to feel a little more confident in photos.
5. When you see a photo of yourself, just DON'T say anything negative about yourself! You are the only person seeing anything negative. Try to see something positive and say that instead.
I hope these tips can help you feel better about yourself in photos this summer.
We had a fun time taking the Vanderen's family pictures up High Creek near Lewiston, Idaho. Rigging could not stop looking at the cows! There were cows all around us and Riggin was usually staring or pointing at them. On instagram, everyone was obsessing over Afton's dress that she got from Eight and Main in Logan. It was fun to be featured on their social media page.
Taking family pictures with little ones can be chaotic and stressful, but it is always worth it in the end!
Sydney and Josh and Josh's mom met me at the power plant by the river in Grace, Idaho for their family photography session. I was so excited to take their pictures in Grace, Idaho because the last time I took their pictures they didn't have their baby. He is sooo squishy and adorable!! I can't even handle his cheeks! He is pure sweetness. At the beginning of the session he kept making the cutest "OH" face whenever anyone would talk to him! We thought he was going to do it the whole time, but grandma Tina and Sydney and Josh got him laughing and smiling so cute for the pictures! It was so nice having Tina there to help me get him smiling for the pictures. I was so impressed with how great he was! Sydney picked out darling outfits for their family session. I believe she told me she got her dress from Olive Ave in Idaho Falls. The Power Plant is a darling place to take pictures especially around sunset. The lighting is great and the scenery is beautiful. I have gone their several times this year because it convenient and beautiful for the people in Grace. I still have openings for family sessions this summer and fall! I would love to take your family portraits. Lets get you some beautiful family pictures and art for your walls!
This was one of my first sessions since being back in Idaho and it doesn't disappoint! I can't wait to see some of these pictures on Kyra and Chases walls! We drove up Cub River near Franklin, Idaho for these family pictures. We wanted nature and mountain scenery. It was so beautiful! The field now has sun flowers in it. I am so excited to go back there and shoot again!
My favorite part about this family session was Summitt, the little girl. She was in such a good mood and loved the camera. She said hilarious things and was worried about a twig getting in her shoe. I also loved seeing little Barretts smiles! He is the sweetest baby.
Kyra has been my friend for lots and lots of years. I went on some of my best adventures with her. I always love chatting with her and I especially love getting to take her family pictures! I am so excited to take more family pictures now that we are about to move to Logan, Utah! If you'd like gorgeous, happy family photos like these, send me an email! I would love to photograph your family.
I want to share a little history behind my photography career. I’ve been taking pictures for friends since I was in junior high! We would get our hair and make up all done and then go out and take pictures of each other! I took my sisters senior pictures when I was a sophomore in high school and I think she’ll never forgive me! She actually sent them to me the other day and said, "Look how much you've improved!" I would sometimes use a point and shoot camera and sometimes borrow the school yearbook camera. My parents bought me my first dslr camera when I was a senior in high school. Thanks parents for all of your support! I will be forever grateful and indebted to everyone who I took pictures of in those early days. Some of those edits.. yikes haha. In 2011/2012 I saw an ad for an internship position while I was attending BYUI. I instantly messaged the photographer, @jon.leask. In those next couple years, that’s when I learned the most and upped my photography game! I am grateful for such a wonderful photography community in Idaho, Utah and AZ! So many kind women and men have helped me learn and grow. My latest photography education experience was at the Kylee Ann destination sleepover! @kyleeannstudios @hiliary.kastudios I can’t even put into words how amazing it was connecting with other photographers and learning more about something I love so much! I actually took these pictures below at the styled shoot! It was fun being with Idaho and Utah photographers in a location that I was more familiar with. We all could have used more protective shoes haha. Those cactus are no joke! They are born to spike you.
These family pictures were almost a year ago! This family has now added a baby boy! I met the Hatch family in Arizona and got to take family pictures for many of their special moments. We both happened to be visiting Logan, Utah, so we got to take their family pictures in the beautiful mountains at Tony Grove. When we got to the mountain up Logan Canyon and saw how beautiful they all looked, I told Natalie that these were going to be my new favorite family pictures and they totally are! Those little girls were so precious! Their outfits coordinated so well and the scenery at Tony Grove was like nothing I had ever seen before! There are wild flowers, all kinds of trees, and mountain views in every direction. I highly recommend taking a Sunday drive and going to see this beautiful place… Or have me take your family pictures there! These are the kinds of photos that look amazing on your walls! I am so excited to take their family portraits again this summer in Utah!
Lots has changed around here! WE MOVED! We first moved to Arizona from Rexburg in June of 2014 when Blake got a job at General Motors. General Motors was a great company for Blake to work for and he enjoyed his time there! In January of 2019, Blake got offered a job in Logan, Utah. He started work in February and we were all moved in with my parents on March 1. We put our things in storage while we tried to sell our house that we had just bought haha. We are so grateful to my parents for taking us in. Our house is now sold in Arizona. Closing will be in June and we will move to our new home in Smithfield around that time! We are excited for our new adventures there. I was pretty sad to leave Arizona, but we have enjoyed being in Idaho with family. Arizona will always be special to me, but you just can't beat the country and mountain views in Idaho. Right now, everything is green. June is my favorite month in Grace.
I sure do love all of the people we left behind in Arizona. I had made lots of great friends in both of the wards we lived in. I had met new friends through my photography business. I was thinking yesterday how many amazing people found me through this very website who I now think of all the time and consider friends. I feel rich with great friends, great family, and great love in my life! Thanks to all of you!
We took these pictures in October. I still haven't printed them. Don't be like me! The two years before we took these pictures, Linden screamed the whole session. Somehow we got darling pictures those years too, but it was a nice change for Linden to not be screaming!
Something I enjoy doing before every session is coming up with poses! Everyone has different heights in their family, so different poses work well with different families. Families with all adult children, and families with little children will have different poses that are better for them.
Here are some pose ideas for families with young children!
Mom squatting with a baby on her lap is one of my favorite things! I also love to have both parents squatting so they are down at the children's levels.
You bet I will always ask mom to grab dad's bicep!
When the toddler is basically a model, no posing is necessary!
Sometimes the little children aren't willing to stand on the ground, but it always makes for a cute picture when they are! I love precious photos with little children holding mom and dad's hands.
As the photographer at sessions with little children, I often can't focus as much on how the mom and dad are standing because I am trying to get the babies to smile and look at the camera. This is a flattering pose for women. If you feel like you aren't standing cute, try popping your front leg.
I love getting family photos of you and your cute family interacting together!
If I try to make my life sound pretty, this is what I do on a daily basis ;)
Just kidding, there is no way to make it sound pretty.
I set my alarm for 7:20 but don't get out of bed til 7:30... I scold my 6 year old because he's not dressed yet... I do this three more times until we are almost late for school. I feed him an ego waffle, bowl of cereal or granola bars. Now you are getting to know all the little details of my life!
I get home and try to get myself and daughter dressed for either preschool, dance lessons or for her to just come to the gym with me. I try to work out every day, although that doesn't always happen. My days are spent having play dates, cleaning, editing pictures, or doing other photography responsibilities.
I pick up the kids from school, feed them, and then we start the bed time routine! By this time I am pooped! I love crawling into bed when my kids go to bed! I either scroll on my phone, work on the computer, sleep, or watch tv! I love watching tv. Ive also recently been reading personal development books. Do you have any book recommendations for me?
On the weekends we like to work on house projects, go on family outings or dates, and go to church. Blake works 2 jobs and is in a masters program so we are really busy around here.
Change and transformation is a huge part of life. I have changed in negative and positive ways over the years. I’ve spent days, months, weeks and years dealing with depression and anxiety. I would think, “Why am I so sad when I have so much joy surrounding me?” That’s one of the most frustrating things about depression and anxiety disorders. You feel numb, and sick and broken when you “should” feel joy, blessings and happiness. I spent years being unhealthy mentally and physically; both of those things played off of each other.
Over the past year I have been able to drastically transform my life. I exercise almost daily, I eat food that nourishes my body, I meditate and try to get myself back to positive thinking when I am in a negative place. I rest and relax with out feeling guilty about it. I find joy in my family and in my life. I don’t have it all figured out, but I am in such a better place than before. I’m so grateful for modern medicine and all of the resources to help us through these situations. I’m so grateful for my patient, charitable husband.
I am not ashamed to admit that I have done mental health counseling and I take antidepressants. Talking about such a raw subject does make me nervous and afraid.
My appearance has changed a lot physically, but I don’t feel more beautiful than I used to be. I know I’ve always been beautiful and I’ve always been loved even though I complain about my physical features. I can now live a happier, healthier, more joyous life because of the changes I’ve made to improve my physical and mental health.
One thing I know is that I didn’t have my experiences because I wasn’t good enough, or because I was being punished or because I wasn’t trying hard enough at life even though that wasn’t always clear to me. I’ve learned so much from my trials. I can relate to others who are going through similar things. I have a greater love and sympathy for people who are struggling. I know my mental health journey isn’t over. I’m grateful for the hard things I had to endure because that’s how I get closer to being who God wants me to be.
I wanted to write this when I started seeing people post pictures of how aging has affected . All of the posts I have seen are full of beauty 10 years ago and today. We are all beautiful children of God on a Divine journey.
Below I have shared pictures of me from 10 years ago, 1 year ago, and today! I was thinking how I’ve changed so much in a year and if I would have done this a year ago I would have negative aging results... but that isn’t true! I was beautiful even when I wasn’t as healthy as I am today. I hope you know you’re beautiful as well no matter what condition your physical appearance is in.
These two have grown so much in the past year! I wanted to write an update about each of them for memories sake! I always go back and watch old videos and it surprises me how much I have forgotten in just a few short years.
Dawson! This boy impresses me every single day. He is so kind and sweet. He makes ME feel special. He loved playing T-ball earlier this year. He was all excited about getting a medal. He and Linden often play games where there is a trophy involved. He graduated from preschool in May and started Kindergarten in August. He has done really well academically and achieved the Honor Roll the first quarter. He loves loves loves legos. We have an insane amount of legos at our house. He is still obsessed with sea life and I swear he knows of every sea creature ever. He also loves dinosaurs and is very knowledgable about those too! He is a smart little guy! He loves working in the garage with Blake. He got a real tool kit for Christmas and has built a few things. He is a pretty fast runner and loves riding his bike. He sounds like a typical little boy, but there is just something super special about him. He has a kind heart like his daddy.
Linden is our little princess. Like she is really a princess! Haha. She pops her foot when you hug her, is ALWAYS singing and wearing a pretty dress, and always wants to have princess make up. Her most favorite thing to do is go to preschool! She loves all of her little friends. She is also doing dance lessons and that's adorable! Linden gets kind of bored at home with me all day. She is much better behaved when she has Dawson to play with or other children. She has a darling little voice and communicates like she is a grown up.
We just loves these kids so much! They're the sweetest little best friends. They always request to have sleep overs in the living room on weekends. They have their moments, but they also love being around each other.
Happy Halloween! Angela makes a remarkable halloween costume every year. She enjoys sewing and creating unique costumes! Check out Angela's instagram page to see more of her costumes, This year her costume was inspired by the movie Coco! She did such a beautiful job on her make up, headpiece and dress!
Angela and I went to high school together and now we both live in Arizona. We haven't been very good about getting together, but we always have a great time when we do! Angela is so easy to talk to, funny and easy to relate with. I was so happy Angela asked me to take photographs of her in her costume! It was inspiring seeing her costume and the amazing piece of art she has created!
I love the Bradford Family! Sherri posts on Facebook the funny things that Araya says and I crack up at every post! I met them a few years ago when Blake and I moved to Arizona. I got to visit Sherri and Bryten often and get to know them better. Sherri is a great listener and I love chatting with her.
We had a very memorable family photo session at Coon Bluff! The light and landscape was beautiful and we had ourselves some good laughs. John had a spider crawl down his shirt but didn't believe his dad that there was a spider in his shirt! It was pretty hilarious and everyone was laughing as he shook out his shirt and got the tiny spider out of it.
NEXT there was a rattle snake! I don't believe I have seen a snake at a session in Arizona so this was my first. I stayed far away but Scott got up close and personal and discovered it was six years old.
I am so happy we got to capture these beautiful family photos of the Bradford family! Thanks Sherri for being an amazing friend and always telling people about my photography!
This session was my first time exploring Phon D Sutton. I can always count on Stacey to come up with a great location idea, great outfits, and great attitudes for their family pictures! I am so happy they have me take their pictures several times a year because I love seeing them. I also love that documenting their family and little Dylan is so important to them.
I will be honest, I don't get my family pictures taken nearly enough! I always love my images when I get them done, but preparing can often be a struggle. The act of getting them taken can also be total chaos! Last year, my daughter screamed for the ENTIRE session!!
I have some tips for a smooth family session with children for you; however you usually need to be prepared for something to go wrong and try to remain calm. First, Try not to let the kids fall asleep in the car. This makes for grouchy smiles and like in my case, a screaming child! When choosing your location, pick somewhere that you don't have to do much off-roading. It's a pain when you're yelling at the kids to get out of the cactus or mud. Make sure the kids are fed before the session and bring a drink and snack to your session just incase. Sometimes we all get hangry! Explain to your children weeks in advance what they will be doing at their session and what you expect of them. Lastly, PRAY! haha. I am not even kidding. I usually pray before every session for a smooth running session and happy memories to be made. I hope those tips are helpful for your family pictures this fall!
Hi there. I'm Nicole. I'm a small town girl from Idaho who loves photography, my Savior and my family. You'll find me in the mountains with my camera around my neck begging my husband, "lets just take one more picture of your S'more." I love to blog about my photography sessions, family life and much more! Come read along.
